In the far west of Pterra, but not quite near any eastern coasts, lies the Yanithryss Jungle, which partially obscures the great, maze-like Velduin Canyon amidst the Jungle. Living within this winding Canyon are the Dal-Velduinar humans, a barely-more-than-primitive society, just a small magnitude more civilized than the northern Dal-Heggoth. These folk have only recently devised their own crossbows, catapults, and ballistas, after fighting Draakhin in the War of Scaled Crowns. Dal-Velduinar have only a crude remembrance of the common human tongue, and mostly speak their own strange dialect, called Veldali. The Velduin Canyon is wide and deep, with many small rivers and streams flowing along the majority of its rifts. Dal-Velduinar live in adobe mud-brick houses along the Canyon walls, which have many wide ledges in some sections. These people venerate great spirits of vegetation, fungus, rain, and shepherding, being mostly a peaceful culture, but they also revere the Vulture-Headed God and the Scorpion God, whose faiths teach opportunism as well as vicious defense of life and property. Thus, most Dal-Velduinar learn at least some fighting skills, particularly with spears, javelins, staves, handaxes, and throwing axes. A small majority of the Dal-Velduinar's food comes from an underground forest, not far beneath the Velduin Canyon, since it is easier to reach than the Yanithryss at the far top of the Canyon. This underground forest, called Gi'ma-Ha'danu Shu'may I'gatua-Pa'u by Dal-Velduinar, the Respectfully Feared Forest of Colorful Darkness, is filled with a variety of unusual plants and fungi that thrive without sunlight, quite varied in coloration. Streams from underground reservoirs trickle in through small cracks along the walls of the great cavern, carrying with them a few small fish, but the only other inhabitants of the underground forest are a large variety of dangerous insects. The cavern has many pillars of stone that support it, which seem as likely as not to be artificial.
