Put that Cell Phone down before I....

One of my favorite scenes involving cell phones was when I saw four folks seated at a table at a restaraunt. They all immediately pulled out cell phones and started chatting on them. My wife asked - why did they even bother to come here together? The unanswerable question strikes again!

Presumably it's legal to drive while talking on the phone in the US, then? It was here until about a year ago, but it's now illegal to do so. A good thing, in my opinion.
It also doesn't help that even before cellphone proliferation, the U.S. has one of the highest number of accidents per capita in the world.

Combine the two, and you've got a lot of dead Americans.

I'd actually like to have a cell phone for emergency use - I often drive to the home of some friends who live about a half-hour drive from my home, and to reach them I usually use a freeway that doesn't have easy access to anyplace to get help if I have car trouble. But I just can't imagine wanting to chit-chat on the cell phone while walking through the grocery store or strolling down the street. I don't like talking on the phone.

That's the main reason I got one. Emergencies. Most of the time it's off unless I'm talking on it or when I was in Key West and used it as a watch when my watch's battery died.
