Putting on armor.

Lord Pendragon

First Post
All right, so my DM recently ruled that the breastplate portion of full plate armor (i.e. full plate without the arm and leg protection) is, in fact, the same as the Breastplate armor listed in the PH.

So I plan on having my PC sleep in his breastplate from now on. With an armor check penalty of -4, it does not incur penalties the next day.

My question, however, has to do with putting the armor on. How long should it take for a character to put on the remaining arm and leg portions of full plate armor, when the breastplate is already strapped in place?

How about the difference ?

I personally would allow it at all, but there seems to be no reason why you should get an extra bonus by reducing the time it takes to don the remaining parts.

well, maybe think of it this way...he's had an incredibly witty idea, that since it would technically work, he should not be penalized for it...however, considering the legs and arms would actually take more time than the breastplate, i'd rule it would still take about 2 and a half to 3 minutes just for putting on the legs and arms...

also consider that the breastplate actually includes leather and metal parts that are put over the legs and arms
this would mean the breastplate part itself would take about the time of a studded leather to don, and only grant the same bonus, if not including other parts of the armour.

but i like the idea...though it might be expanded, such as sleeping in Half the plate...literally keeping the entire thing in almost halves...
Thus while you might not be able to sleep in it, and have Some type of armour to protect you during surprise, you could don it normally in about 2 minutes, and hastilly in about 1 minutes, to 8 or so rounds...

just my 2 cents

Because it was brought up (slightly) let me point out that this was not my idea. I had a PC who was caught out of his armor, and when we looked up the donning armor chart, I discovered (for the first time since I started playing a couple years ago!) that the fight would be over by the time he got to the battle.

Rather than leave his friends in the lurch, he runs out to help unarmored. But after the battle was over, the PC decided that he'd better have some kind of armor to wear while sleeping, since he didn't want to be caught so vulnerable again. I therefore inquired about buying a breastplate, at which time my DM informed me that without the arms and legs, I had the equivalent of a breastplate already included in my full-plate armor.

So it wasn't my idea, it was my DM's. I'm just going with it and looking for a fair estimation of how long it'd take to put on the remainder of the full plate armor.
however, considering the legs and arms would actually take more time than the breastplate, i'd rule it would still take about 2 and a half to 3 minutes just for putting on the legs and arms...
This is what I was looking for. I wasn't sure if the arms and legs should take roughly the same time as the breastplate, more, or less. 3 minutes sounds good.

The REAL answer to your question is to get the called enchantment from DotF on your armour, which allows you to put it on one round. Well, that, or invest in a bunch of rope trick scrolls.

Don't I know it! But the campaign is Iron Kingdoms, so the chances of getting my masterwork full plate enchanted to +1 Called Full Plate is...slim. :p

There's a feat in the KoKPG called "Rapid Ready". I can't recall off-hand how much it increases your armor-up speed, but the picture has a bunch of naked guys starting to strap on their greaves, and the guy with Rapid Ready in full plate and cloak, just making the final adjustments to his helmet...

It halves the needed time ... ;)

Honestly, I would rather say, the player leaves the chain part of his armour on and thus enjoys the protection of a chain shirt.
