Qualifying for MindSpy PrC

Does the Telepathy ability granted by the Mindbender PrC (CArc) meet the "Detect Thoughts" requirements of the MindSpy PrC (CW)? My instinct is to say No, because it does not specifically replicate that spell... but I'm not absolutely certain about that.

No. Telepathy does not allow you to read another's thoughts, merely to project your own. Detect Thoughts is a specific ability, either a spell or a spell-like ability. Your instinct is right.

However, I think I'd let the mindbender's MindRead ability qualify... assuming that being able to do it a limited number of times per day works.

What about the Psion's Read Thoughts Power? It seems to be very close to detect thoughts, do you think that would work for the prerequisite? I've wondered about that for awhile now.

Yeah, no doubt, he just asked abouit Telepathy. MindRead would work too.

I'd also allow the Psionic Read Thoughts for a psiMind Spy.

I appreciate all the help on this. The reason I'm looking at it is I was thinking about having a Warlock NPC try to get to be a Mindspy - I thought those class abilities would mesh well with his own... but the difficulty is getting him the base ability to get him into it.

Aren't most of the Mindspy's ability's based on using detect thoughts? If that is true, how could making something that doesn't simulate detect thought pass for a prerequisite help you?

It wouldn't. That's kinda why I asked the question. I'm trying to get him to pass that prereq as easily as possible. Ideally I'd like to make it from a standard race... but a doppleganger does seem the way to go...
