Quality of gaming at Dragon*Con

Hey guys,

I'm trying to decide whether going to Dragon*Con is worth the several hundred dollars in registration and lodging it will cost me. I have a number of friends who are going, but most are either on staff or more interested in the comics/media tracks.

So I'll mostly have to entertain myself, and the big draw is gaming (RPG and board). Having read some of the GenCon horror stories, I'd just like to hear some honest opinions of people of have been to D*C spent a nice chunk of their time gaming.

Do players and GMs know the rules? Do they know the rules too well, and lord it over everyone? Are reasonable, and willing to let little things slide in the name of everybody having a good time. Are the GMs able to manage a group of strangers so personalities don't get in the way too much? Even when all that other stuff sucks, it it fun?

Please don't answer based on your best or worse D*C experience; answer based on your typical experience.

Thanks,
Norne

I've never played in a tournament there, but there is one consolation - after hearing that GenCon's Open Gaming was somewhat of a disappointment, I can say that the times I've been there that DragonCon's Open Gaming has been very nice. A huge room, usually full of people. I've always been able to find a pick-up game of something going on, and I've been introduced to a number of new games that way. Board, RPG's and wargames all go on in the same area.

Well the die is cast. I'm going. But I'd still like to hear feedback on the general quality of people's experiences with RPGs and board games at Dragon*Con.
