Question about mounts: dire wolves, worgs, riding dogs...

Hello. I hope to join a group soon, and when I begin character creation, I would like to start off with a mount. Particularly, (after watching LoTR T.T.) I would like to have a dire wolf as a mount/animal companion. I was told that worgs, and riding dogs are incapable of carrying human sized creatures (or elves for that matter), so are dire wolves hard to come across? Do you think most DMs would let u start off with amount of that magnitude. What are animal companions, and is every class able to obtain one?

Rangers and druids can get animal companions, paladins get special mounts as well.

None of these classes would be able to have a dire wolf companion (that you could ride) at level 1, so you'd need to start at a higher level (DM?).

Going by the druid class description and the animal companion class ability, a druid would have to be at least 7th level for a Dire Wolf companion, e.g. a ranger would need to be level 14... for the paladin, check the DMG, there are optional rules IIRC.

OK. gotcha. Most likely I will starting off a 1st level wizard (so im going to need all teh companions I can get). If I played a drow, would a riding dog be able to mount , whether walking, running (into battle), and for how long. Well basically, do you know where I might be able to see the stats of one, possible even a picture. Are they bigger than normal dogs, like worg size?

Dunno which normal book shows a riding dog right now, they are big, but not big enough to carry medium sized creatures... you might play a child though (small size, check the stats in the d20 modern SRD). Children should be able to ride on riding dogs.
