Question about Tumble

Kai Lord

Hero
From p. 75 in the PHB under the heading for the Tumble skill:

DC 15 -- Tumble up to 20 feet (as part of normal movement), suffering no attacks of opportunity while doing so.

DC 25 -- Tumble up to 20 feet (as part of normal movement), suffering no attacks of opportunity while doing so and moving through areas occupied by enemies.

Does the DC 25 refer to situtations such as a fighter standing in an open doorway and you use the Tumble skill to run up and slide between his legs to get by? If so, damn....

Uh... no, actually, if the fighter is you friend, you can move through him freely. The DC25 is for moving through the five foot square occupied by an enemy, or through multiple enemies to get to a point. You take no attack of opportunity if you succeed, if you don't, you immediately take an AOO. For instance, you are facing a Troll, you want to get to the other side of the Troll but you are in a five foot wide corridor. So, you tumble through the first ten feet of his reach, having only to roll the fifteen, but once you get to the troll you have to roll at least the 25 to go through his square and get to the other side. It's a good way to flank opponents.

If the fighter is your enemy, then yes. If the fighter is your friend, then as Geo says, you can already freely pass through his space (he'll make room for you to get by.)

The beauty of it is that even if you fail that check, 1 rank in Tumble will allow you to get by your foe (though taking the AoO) while without Tumble, you can't get past him at all. :)

I've decided to house-rule Tumble

IMHO, it's a little too good (for exactly this reason):

I set the DC to tumble around someone at 10+their highest attack bonus, and the DC to tumble throug someone at 20+their highest attack bonus. I considered doing it based on BAB, but those DC's are just too low

You could make it an opposed roll... Tumble vs. Reflex Save.

Then it would be based on quickly the enemy reacts to the tumber's tumble. If they aren't quick enough, the tumbler gets by without an AoO. If they are quick enough, then get get to make an AoO against the tumbler.

Others use 15+highest BAB or 25+highest BAB. That's high enough :D

Yet others use the Tumble check as AC against the AoOs. Now that's REALLY rude :D
