D&D (2024) Question: I have players using dnd beyond char creators, will it be 2024?

All,

I am restarting a campaign from a while back, with some existing characters. Theuy are going to level up and then we get the party started.

My question: I have some players that made their characters using books, but several using the dnd beyond character creator. If they use the creator, will it default them to 2024 or does it still remain 2014?

If they were created using 2014, they should still be 2014. You may need to go into the character editor and make sure the "Legacy Content" box is ticked. You may also need to take a look at their spells in particular and make sure the sheet isn't pulling in 2024 spells. Otherwise, should be fine.

If they are creating characters from scratch, it will default to 2024. You'll need to adjust the sources in the first tab of the character creator to use only the Legacy sources.

If they are making new character the character creator will present the 2024 options first for the classes. One has to scroll down for the older versions.

As long as the campaign rules are set properly, both should be available. I just tested it and was able to access both.

Heck, you can multiclass 2014 and 2024 classes together. The only limitation I see is so far is that a 2014 class can't take a 2024 subclass, and a 2024 class can't access the 2014 core features that were updated (like spells and feats).

Edit: Wrong about feats, a 2024 class can take the 2014 feats, even if they've been updated.

Spells are the biggest one to watch. Both spells are presented in spell selection, and the old versions are marked legacy (at least for 2024 characters, not sure about 2014 characters) and unless one is paying attention it is easy to pick the wrong version.

My experience has been that everyone who has tried to create a 2014 character has had the 5.24 rules creep in somewhere in the process despite their best efforts. It's really frustrating, mostly because it's due to bad design choices rather than any true necessity.

If they're using Beyond and aren't exceptionally savvy, they will be creating mostly 2024 characters. If you want 2014 characters, you'll probably want to suggest that your players create paper or myth-weavers character sheets.

Just going to point out that there is no issue running a mix of 2014 and 2024.

Generally, yes. But the spells thing can be an issue currently in DNDBeyond. You can have 2024 and 2014 characters in the same campaign with minimal issues. But having two spells with the same name that work differently can cause unwanted confusion at the table - and DNDBeyond right now has a tendency to add the 2024 spells in places they aren't necessarily wanted on the character sheet.

IMO, it makes more sense that 2 characters cast spells differently than the exact same ones.

But sure, it could be confusing for the players.
