What is the name of the apparatus that raises and lowers a portcullis? I know it's a wheel/winch type operation but the term escapes me at the moment.

I have another question about the portcullis, how do you pronounce it? This has been such a topic of discussion at my gaming table I forget how I originally pronounced it. I've been saying port-cul-is lately. Is this right?

never really thought about before... i just say port - cul - lis.


but i guess if i were to think more... i might get the ll confused and try the spanish or french sound...

like mi yoh..... bathing suit.
