Question regarding charcater languages

Hi Everyone,

I was hoping someone could clear this up for me. Assume I have a dwarven PC at 1st level. His automatic languages are common and dwarven. If he also has an intelligence score of 16, does he get 3 extra languages, or does dwarven count as one?

I know this is a simple question, but I'm drawing a blank here. Thanks for your help!

Hi,

no--the base two languages don't count, which is why having two automatic languages is a perk. In your example, the three languages gained from an Int 16 can come from any of the race's Bonus languages (with dwarves, the langs listed on p. 15 of the PHB. If you want your Dwarf to know Celestial or Gnoll or Ignan or some language not on the list, you need to spend two skill points for each.
