Question? Spellcaster level combining

(I hope I have this in the right place and correct format)

Does anyone know where it outlines, if any/which spell caster levels will combine?

In my gaming group we are "discussing" if a charater with wizard levels and sorcerer levels has one combined caster level or two separate levels.

I belive I have read where you combine the caster levels and one of the rules lawyers in group agrees. Another lawyer said they do not.

We all agree that spell list and spell numbers per day must be keep separate.

example 1: Wizard 4lvl plus Sorerer 3lvl = Caster lvl 7th
example 2: Wizard 2lvl plus Sorerer 2nd = Wizard caster lvl 2nd and Sorerer caster lvl 2nd

The DM will give the final rule but for now she is "hearing arguments" before ruling.

Strictly going by the RAW, a spellcaster with sorcerer and wizard levels has two separate spellcasting levels. However, his sorcerer and wizard levels do stack for determining the abilities of his familiar.

Complete Divine and Complete Arcane introduce the feat Practised Spellcaster, which allows you to increase the caster level of one spellcasting class by 4, up to a limit of your total HD. This can be taken once for each spellcasting class that you have.

Unearthed Arcana also introduces a variant Magic Rating system which works like BAB and allows your caster levels from your spellcasting classes (and a fraction of the levels from your non-spellcasting classes) to stack.
