Questions on darkness spells

Ovinomancer

No flips for you!
I recently had a character that was surronded by baddies. I barely survived, but, after the encounter, I thought about using a combination of the blindsight spell and darkness if I find myself in this situation again. In order to reduce the amount of casting (and AoO's) neccesary, I wanted a permanent item that shed darkness. This led to the following questions:

1) Is there a spell that does the same thing as everburning torch, only with darkness. I can't seem to find a perment duration darkness spell in the PHB.

2) Can an item with a darkness spell be placed in a pouch or other container and have the darkness emenation snuffed out like a light spell?

Thanks

1. There isn't one. You could always try and research one, as your DM allows, but keep in mind that it would probably be a higher level than Continual Flame.

2. Yes. The item touched sheds darkness as a torch sheds light, and can therefore be "snuffed out".

Note, of course, that in 3.5, the Darkness spell doesn't actually make it "dark", so Blindfight isn't that useful.

It helps a little with the 20% miss chance, but the combination doesn't have nearly the synergy it had in 3E, where it effectively made everyone blind...

Gah.

Lame as it sounds, my excuse is that I read the message on Friday, and couldn't reply to it until Sunday... and neglected to read it again properly to check what he'd said.

But despite that, the underlying point is the same - Darkness plus Blindsight in 3E was awesome, because everyone else was blind, and you weren't.

Darkness plus Blindsight in 3.5 is somewhat 'meh', since everyone can still see you. They just get a bit of a miss chance.
