quick ideas for small "dungeon"

I'd like some suggestions for inhabitants of a smallish dungeon complex. There are about 15 rooms, which were once a pair of "apartments" in an underground city. When the city was active they were lived in by wealthy humans.

Now, they have been abandoned for hundreds or even thousands of years, leaving behind no trace of the original residents. Most of the tunnels have collapsed, and the PCs have arrived by accident through a hole in the roof of one residence.

The PCs are 5th level, and there are 4 of them. I'd like to avoid my usual choices of foes for the area, which would tend towards giant rats, possibly spiders, maybe a wraith or two. Any other ideas? The pcs will be passing through on their way to discovering another place which I've already got designed.

Thanks!

Don't put anything in them. But leave signs that something/someone has been there...recently. Describe it in a way that is scary and that should give them the idea they should be getting out of there rather than messing around searching.

If you want, place two really nasty things that would have given your group serious trouble. But they are dead by mutual combat.

If you have to have a combat, one or both can still be alive but severly injured. They ignore the PCs unless they are attacked by them. If the PCs engage the creatures, let it be an easy kill.

Fifth level is a good time for using Jermlaine (a.k.a. jinxkin - without my books, what are the chances I spelled both of those correctly?) as opponents. Maybe they came upon the abandoned residence and added their own network of (tiny) tunnels, using the human-sized rooms to set traps to capture prey.

Just a quick thought.
