Even though he can't actually use it, can the sorceror take the Quicken Spell feat in order to eventually meet the prerequisites for the epic feat Automatic Quicken Spell ?

Arguably, a fighter can take the Quicken Spell feat.

Not necessarily, there are a few ways to make use of Quicken Spell.

But that isn't the question. Yes, you can take a "useless" feat, if you want to, as long as you meet the requirements.

Or even a commoner.

EDIT: And why 'arguably'. According to the SRD, Quicken Spell has no pre-requisites a fighter couldn't meet (or at all).

The description of metamagic feats vaguely implies that only spellcasters can take them, but it's certainly not explicit.

"METAMAGIC FEATS
As a spellcaster’s knowledge of magic grows, she can learn to cast spells in ways slightly different from the ways in which the spells were originally designed or learned."

I know a paladin who took Quicken, which he obviously couldn't use because of the spell level bump. When he made 12th level, he took Divine Metamagic. Then the Quickened buffing began, and the cheese was very good.

Not a bad idea, but that costs 5 turning attempts. Even with taking the Extra Turning feat, it'll be hard to use it more than twice a day.

That said, three feats (Quicken Spell, Divine Metamagic, Extra Turning) to be able to quicken two spells per day at no extra cost, compared to seven feats (Quicken Spell, Sudden Empower, Sudden Extend, Sudden Maximize, Sudden Silent, Sudden Still, Sudden Quicken) to be able to quicken one spell per day at no extra cost -- it's easy to see which is the best choice!

Thanks guys !

Yeah, they really nerfed the epic feat in complete arcane, but I completely understand the rationale. Previously, with 3 epic feats a caster could cast 2 spells per round all the time. Now, well he needs 9 feats.
