Quicken Spell

As Shard o Glase said, back in the day, there were plenty of people who were considering house ruling it. I don't know who did, but I think it was a common enough sentiment to merit "a lot". Note that I didn't say "the majority".

Also, anyone who thinks quickened haste is the bomb is off their rocker. Sure, it's damn good, but :):):):), it's a 7th level spell, all so you get one extra spell this turn. Whoopee. For a 6th level slot and loss of that same one spell this turn, you can haste your entire party... and that's far far more useful than casting one extra spell yourself this turn. Mass Haste is the bomb-diggity.

Four levels is just generally not worth it, even for a sorcerer. There are times when it's really handy, but burning out a slot four levels higher because you have to have it right now is a bit of a drawback, methinks.

Perhaps I'm wrong. I'll admit that I have only played a Wizard in 3e, and not a Sorcerer. But my friends have played sorcerers, and we ruled that quicken works for sorcerers, and it never unbalanced anything. However, I'm open to suggestions as to how it is abuseable.

Which is probably why they were so keen on play a sorcerer. :D

It's not necessarily a question of abuse, but I view it as just like giving a fighter a rogue's sneak attack without making him take rogue levels. Doesn't do anything but piss the rogue off that his toes are being stepped on. Now, in a home-brew game where all classes are really one class and nobody has any telltale signs that they are any better or smarter than anyone else and everyone comes from the same exact plain old cookie cutter, then a house rule like this would be fine. :)

If someone wants a singing barbarian that can turn undead, I tell them to play a barbarian/bard/cleric. Likewise, if someone wants a sorcerer that can cast quickened-free action spells, I tell them to play a sorcerer/wizard. I'm just not big on the idea, that's all. Just my opinion.
