Well, you're right about that, they technically don't. However, it is true that the story elements of the campaign worlds as I perceive them have genasi as extremely rare races, and thus to select one as my PC race brings about a whole host of story elements that have to do with that... unless we just completely ignore them. But that seems even worse. Part of the reason to play a warforged in Eberron (for example) is to deal with the story elements of being a living construct in a human world. It's an intrinsic part of playing that race. By the same token, being a genasi in the Nentir Vale has an intrinsic story of being a race that is barely existent, and perhaps not even from the prime plane at all, but arrived from the Elemental Chaos. And sure, I could just ignore it... but I keep thinking to myself "well, if I don't want to play that story, then why play a genasi at all?" And to be forced to admit that the only answer I have is "because I want to play a tactical warlord with 18s in Str and Int"... just rubs me the wrong way. I would have loved to have seen a more populous race have a Str/Int combo just so that the potential of having a more open story for the tactical warlord would be there. But as it stands now... I have to play a genasi, and thus I feel like I have to take everything storywise that goes along with it. Personal problem on my part, I fully admit... but it is what it is.
