Raise Dead (and similiar) = Straight xp penalty

I've never much cared for current way that level loss works after being returned from the dead. You are set to "mid-point" at the previous level, which can vary a lot based on whether you were at the top or bottom of the range for your level when the PC died.

Has anyone experimented with using a straight xp loss according to formula?

I'm thinking something like losing 750 xp x current level.

Workable?

That makes more sense. Also have it that it's just like the XP lost from some spells. It can't rob you of a level, but it does impede future level gain. That is, unless it's one of those things that can't be touched lest revival be overpowered.

I don't see a problem with the experience point loss. It will make things easier than actual level loss.

I personally favor the permanent -1 CON each time you are raised, but I kinda like death being a big deal for PCs.

If you have a character who is at the top of the xp range for his level, 750 xp/level might not drop him a level at all. A 10th level character with 54,000 xp drops to 46,500 xp, but is still 10th level.

On the other hand, a character who is near the bottom of a level can lose more than one level. Consider a 2nd level character with 1100 xp- losing 1500 xp will kill him. This only happens at low levels, though.

I work out how much XP a pc would lose from mid point of current, to mid point of previous. They then lose that many xp - it seems to work fairer than straight drop to mid point

(based on the death of a PC 600 xp away from next level a few months ago)

An easy fix for that is to introduce XP debt instead of XP loss. The XP debt gets worked off as you gain XP, 1/2 going to pay off debt the other half going to your XP total as normal. Any odd points go to pay off debt.
