The "debt" sub-plot reminds me of a little know PbtA ttrpg called Uncharted Worlds. In that system, each PC has a personal debt that drives them into and out of situations. Or, the group can have a shared debt they're working together to resolve. OR, PCs can have personal AND a group debt.
