In America, at least, (I can't speak for other countries), books only come out in softcover after the Hardcover has been out for, oh, at least 6 months, if not a year or better. Or direct to softcover for books that are too minor to warent a hard cover.. Harry Potter has always been really slow to come to softcover for us.

Yup (though Goblet of Fire is out in paperback in the US; I own a copy). In other countries, it's pretty common for a trade paperback (hardcover-sized parebacks) to come out at the same time as the hardcover or very shortly after. But there's not much of a trade paperback market here.

and done!

let's see... 766 pages in... we'll call it about 8 hours, maybe a little less.

Must be somethig strange about Sam Goodys. In my little town its the only thing approaching a bookstore (which is sad). At noon today, they had 60 preorders setting around and 4 extra for walk in sales. I could have grabbed one if so inclined.

I didnt think Id see an un-preordered copy untill later in the week.

Here in Sweden, Midsummer's day is pretty much a dead day on account of everyone being hung over since drinking too much on Midsummer's eve. But I decided to call a department store to see if they were open today, and the answering machine said "Midsummer's day, 12 to 16." So, I went to that department store... only to find that they weren't open at all!

So, I'll be getting mine tomorrow.
