Range Increments on thrown weapons question

What if you are throwing straight up? In our last adventure one of our weaker NPC that is part of our group cast a fly spell and flew up about 90ft. The bugbears beneath him then proceeded to throw javelins at him. Now 90ft straight up is kinda hard to do, I dont think I could even throw a small stone that high much less a javelin. 90ft up is the size of a nine story building. Are there any rules on increasing the range penalty for throwing straight up?

No, nothing in the core rules. A house rule I've generally used for differing heights between missile attacker and target is that vertical distances count double going up and half going down. So your 90' straight vertical distance counts as 180', out of range for javelin casts with a 30' increment. Attacks that cross vertical as well as horizontal distance add the adjusted ranges together.

(50' straight up would be a heck of a javelin throw, but not ridiculous, anyway.)
