By feeling the vibrations in the ground you make a Wilderness Lore check to determine what they are- therebye identifying the prey without seeing them. You then wait five seconds and check where the creatures are now. That's how you get direction and speed. This was a great trick used to track trains on the tracks- tracks carry vibrations very well, afterall. Aragorn must have killer skillz to have done that, and the solid rock mountain would have helped to channel the vibrations. I don't have the rules for Tremorsense handy, but I'd use Listen checks to detect the vibrations/sound- DC 15 + some number for distance and material (+15 for swamp, etc), and Wilderness Lore to properly interpret this, probably DC 15 again. Revamping the Ranger... As far as spying and infiltrating- with the simplicity and ease of multiclassing in 3rd edition, giving the Ranger an emphasis on these very roguish job descriptions pulls some of the life out of the Rogue. The Wilderness Spy should be a Ranger/Rogue class combo. Giving the ranger advanced powers of movement through the wilderness, survival, hunting, and ambushing is perfectly in-line with being wilderness dweller and sneak-warrior, but with the flavor and nuance all-ranger. The ranger just needs some adjustments so he doesn't *need* to multiclass to manage some of his major archetypes. I think Favored Enemy should be reduced to a feat, or two. One for combat, one for hunting (skills). And more than just the ranger should have access. Why couldn't a fighter master the art of slaying dragons? Its all about draconic anatomy and tactics... For those who haven't, check out the 'argo-ranger' , and give your opinion! I think it solves a lot of the problems raised here, if you accept a Favored Terrain thing as a good special ability.
