Quick data crunch Okay, here's a quick number-crunch of the data on the publishers page. Eliminated from this list are: Publishers with 5 or fewer products released, Publishers with average reviews of 3.5 or less. Here's the long list: Publisher # Of Products Avg Rating DireKobold.com 17 5.00 Superb Tyranny Games 6 5.00 Superb Cryptosnark Games 5 4.80 Superb Dog House Rules 5 4.44 Good Malladins Gate 7 4.41 Good Hero Games 18 4.33 Good Holistic Design 12 4.33 Good Mad Kaiser Games 8 4.33 Good Citizen Games 8 4.29 Good Privateer Press 8 4.22 Good Malhavoc Press 37 4.21 Good Bad Axe Games 8 4.18 Good Darkfuries 15 4.17 Good Creative Mountain Games 24 4.10 Good Green Ronin Publishing 66 4.09 Good Kenzer & Co 62 4.07 Good E.N. Publishing 26 4.06 Good Fantasy Flight Games 59 4.05 Good Necromancer Games 39 4.03 Good Fiery Dragon Productions 34 4.02 Good QuikLink 11 4.00 Good Guildhouse Games 8 4.00 Good S T Cooley Publishing 7 4.00 Good Behemoth3 6 4.00 Good Paradigm Concepts 21 3.97 Average Dark Quest Games 23 3.96 Average Guardians of Order 16 3.94 Average Eden Studios 6 3.94 Average The Game Mechanics 10 3.93 Average Silverthorne Games 16 3.90 Average Sword & Sorcery Studios 51 3.85 Average Atlas Games 38 3.85 Average Living Imagination 7 3.84 Average Expeditious Retreat Press 13 3.80 Average Mystic Eye Games 42 3.79 Average Ancient Awakenings Pub. 5 3.78 Average UKG Publishing 19 3.75 Average Gold Rush Games 9 3.75 Average Oriflam 9 3.75 Average Pinnacle Entertainment Gp. 18 3.74 Average Wizards of the Coast 128 3.71 Average Bastion Press 42 3.71 Average RPGObjects 42 3.69 Average Goodman Games 33 3.67 Average Sovereign Press 15 3.67 Average DaemonEye Publishing 5 3.67 Average Alderac Entertainment Gp. 90 3.63 Average Ronin Arts 171 3.62 Average Mongoose Publishing 165 3.60 Average Monkey God Enterprises 25 3.60 Average Dark Portal Games 7 3.57 Average Anubium 5 3.50 Average Interactive Design Adv. 5 3.50 Average As has already been noticed, having a large number of releases (and therefore, a large number of reviews) pushes a company down on the list. Now going down this list, you can see that some companies do rise head and shoulders above the rest, defying the general trend. Malhavoc, Green Ronin, Kenzer, Fantasy Flight, Sword and Sorcery. (Now keep in mind... this data is HIGHLY suspect. There are some EXCELLENT companies that aren't part of this list.) Now here's another tiny correlation to have a look at: Malhavoc - Monte Cook Green Ronin - Chris Pramas Sword and Sorcery - Well, white wolf... What do you learn from this list? Experience matters. Look in the book. See who's involved. What have they worked on before? Have you heard of them? It's important. Kenzer and Fantasy Flight don't have that, but hey... you gotta start somewhere. Also, there's no substitute for sitting down and actually READING some books... a random page ought to tell you whether they know how to put a paragraph together. And finally, Jim would have my head if I didn't mention that BASTION PRESS puts out some really nifty products. Torn Asunder is the only add-on critical hit system I've seen that's actually fun to play, and Oathbound is, in my opinion, the ideal DnD setting. All the stuff that makes no sense in the "Real World" makes sense in the Forge.
