they have a +10 to hit at lvl 5... I don't see the problem with this... Yeah- It's a small town milita, and yeah they are just guards, but they can really well- trained, with pinpoint accuracy, giving up power (only dealing 1d6) in the process. a lvl 1 ftr (1BAB, +2 (14 dex) + 1 (MW bow)+ 1 (MW arrows)+1 pt blank+1 wf) already has a +7 to hit. So he gave them a couple of bonuses because of specialized training, or tactical advantages... big deal. Personally, I would have just fudged the rolls,a nd said that the guards were really lucky. Its the DMs job to keep the game exciting. And if he has to fudge a few rolls to keep you on your toes (and not rely on the tank to plow through everything) then that is what he shoudl do... Personally, i dont see why he told you their to hit, or their str or whatever. his NPCs are for his eyes only- and you have no reason to be askin. I would have just said they got a few lucky rolls in. And as long as no one died, or their character drastically changed in any way, I say he was just trying to make it fun and interesting. Cut him some slack... when he kills one of your guys with one fatal arrow- then come runing and screaming he's an evil DM. but while he is just fidling with numbers- let him have it. Even the DM deserves a victory every now and then. how fun is it for him to have all his creations and NPCs bowled over in two rounds without even getting a shot in? so- you are actually saying that you are not upset at the DM, but actually a player of the group. but since he is playing by the rules, you have nothing to complain about- so you rant about the DM being unfair... Talk to the DM and come up with fun ways of toying with him- and maiing his armor a hindrance rather than a godsent. One more thing I just thought of. A Ftr1/ Sor1 has trus strike 3 times a day. so if a group of 8 lvl 2 guys attack (CR 4) in two waves of 4, they would be able to attack in round one, back up and cast true strike in round two and attack in round three (other group does the opposite) and so would hit you in six successive rounds. At lvl 5, no one can handle that... what do you have? like 20 HP? if attackin with longswords, that would be 24d8+ 24 (12 str) or roughly 132HP , and they get flankin bonuses.... I would say that a Dm who puts a lil thought into this would be able to come up with fun ways to hit you- without resorting to these cheap tricks.
