I am working on an adventure that is a riff on the Beowulf myth for a party of dwarven heroes. Here are the custom monsters I'll be using for a couple of different encounters. First is the standard version and then the "Grendel" solo version. They are basically cave bears with speed, brains and endless greed. Ravaging Mauler Level 7 Skirmisher; Medium natural humanoid XP 300 Initiative +7 Senses Perception +5 HP 80; Bloodied 40 AC 21; Fortitude 23, Reflex 23, Will 21 Speed 8 M Claw (standard; at-will) +12 vs. AC; 1d8+5 damage. m Ravaging Claws (standard; at-will) The ravaging mauler makes two claw attacks against the same target; if both claws hit, the mauler deals an extra 5 damage to the target. Furious Leap (move; recharge 5 6) The ravaging mauler shifts 4 squares. Alignment Chaotic Evil Languages Goblin Skills Bluff +12, Nature +10, Stealth +12 Str 19 (+7) Dex 18 (+7) Wis 14 (+5) Con 16 (+6) Int 8 (+2) Cha 8 (+2) Ravaging Mauler Info The ravaging mauler is a cruel and cunning killer. They resemble bear-men, but with more fangs. Their fingers are tipped with long vicious claws. Mauler’s often collect the trinkets and treasures of their prey, wearing their horde on their backs, as it were. Makos the Mauler Level 10 Solo Brute; Large natural humanoid XP 2500 Initiative +8 Senses Perception +9 HP 424; Bloodied 212 AC 24; Fortitude 26, Reflex 23, Will 24 Speed 8 Action Points 2 M Claw (standard; at-will) Reach 2; +14 vs. AC; 2d8+5 damage. m Ravaging Claws (standard; at-will) Makos makes two claw attacks against the same target; if both claws hit, the mauler deals an extra 5 damage to the target. m Swat (immediate reaction when someone flanks; at-will) Makos targets a creature flanking it: +14 vs. Fortitude; the target is pushed 3 squares. Furious Leap (move; recharge 5 6) The ravaging mauler shifts 4 squares. Alignment Chaotic Evil Languages Goblin Skills Athletics +16, Bluff +13, Nature +14, Stealth +14 Str 23 (+11) Dex 16 (+8) Wis 18 (+9) Con 18 (+9) Int 10 (+5) Cha 14 (+7) Ravaging Mauler Info Makos is the king of the maulers, a hulking brute with an endless appetite for dwarven flesh and gold. In combat he utilizes his Swat and Furious Leap to avoid being flanked. He is a wily foe and will focus on weaker party members and/or healers, even if he is marked. Makos makes his lair near dwarven outposts and forges, coming at night to feast and take baubles for his horde until the outpost becomes deserted or the resistance grows too strong. Then he leaves for greener pastures. Like the smaller maulers, Makos wears his treasure horde on his body in bandoliers of gold items, jewelry and even earings.
