Rave: The New Argonauts

Dragon-Slayer

First Post
I bought this on rpgnow and have sat and read through the pdf and I can say that it is amazing (and a bargain for $5 until November 15th). Most any DM would be hard pressed to find all of the useable ideas, feats and variant rules for that price. The Greek world is low magic, however many of the variants, feats and ideas can be used in any setting. I am also ready to add a few of these to the Black Company setting when it comes out as well.

A few highlights:
Feats: Armor Defense Mastery, Field Surgeon, etc, well written and sensible.
Variant poison rules: Very well thought out and easily useable in any campaign information.
Spells: Geared to a low magic world and following mythic tradition, spells like Deathcloak and Baleful Polymorph will see action in my campaign world.
Magic Items: Thunderbolts, Hydra Skin CLoak, Hydra Heart, more use in my campaign world.

This is Sean Reynolds's new book right? It does sound pretty cool. I'm interested in anything low-magic right now. Have you checked out Grim Tales by any chance? I'm curious as to how the two would play together.

Yes, it is Sean K. Reynolds new book, and it is very handy for a low magic or starting low magic campaign (where the PCs start small and move outward into a bigger world). I have not checked out Grim Tales, however many of the rules in the New Argonauts appear to me at least to be highly portable if you were not playing in the setting itself or if you were augmenting the setting.

I'll be looking forward to a review entry in the old review corner here amigo. We need more reviews!

Jiminy, I suppose I can give it a go. I do want to go over the culture section to give a better review as I was looking at ways to incorporate the information into my own games and I would want to give a detailed impression of all sections. I will read it again and write up the best review I can.

Thanks, DS. I'm looking forward to your potential review. :)

I have begun fleshing out a review of the New Argonauts, I do want to be thorough and not leave anything out. I can honestly say I am very impressed by this product, and at the price of $5, come on, who couldn't use something from this? I had been quietly waiting and checking your website for the release, and then I spied it was out, slipped to Rpgnow, made my purchase and started reading the .pdf. I have been a fan of the genre since I was a nipper and pictured a campaign similar to the old Jason and the Argonauts movie, various books on Greek myths and paintings of the time of myth or Clash of the Titans (ok, the book was better for this one), and I wasn't disappointed. I do look for ideas, variants and items/creatures that I can use in my homebrew (which I suspect other DMs do) and found a plethora.

I am very thankful that I got over my pdf product apprehension via other companies (Adamant and Ronin Arts) although I was eyeing the New Argonauts for some time and liked the previews (feats and the mythic centaur). I hope to see much more from this setting, the deeper I read, the more I want to pure mythic Greek setting.
