Raven Queen vs the Fates...

Ok, I might be running a 4E game and something I came up with is this as a part of the campaign setting:

This campaign is going to have gods from Eberron, Forgotten Realms, Greek Mythology, and the default setting. Most are from FR and default, with 1 or 2 from Greek Myth and Eberron.

The Raven Queen whose portfolio is Death, Winter and Fate is looking to acquire the powers and influence of the The Fates, from greek mythology, whose influence I have as Prophesy and Destiny. Now, this is for a campaign setting that has both the Raven Queen and the Fates in it.

For the Raven Queen I have her Fate portfolio more about the inevitability of fate, as in Death and Taxes. In context, we are talking relatively short term things within an creatures life; and the Fates deal with Prophesy and Destiny, things that are really, really long term the span of empires or the life of gods and other powerful beings.

The Raven Queen is a fairly new god and in her history she is somewhat of portfolio envier and always looks for ways to acquire more power.

The Fates are older than pretty much everything and may, perhaps be older than the Primordials and the Dawn War.

How in name of Gygax could the Raven Queen ever hope to bring about the end of the Fates and acquire their power? I am not necessarily going to let that happen, per se, but this is something that will be happening in the background and may spill into the foreground.

The only thing that came to mind might be finding the body of a long dead entity that may be as old as the Fates and harnessing that power along with the power of souls to try and force her way into it and drain them or something like that... or how about an eldritch machine about as old with the ability to shift powers of divine beings.... That seems somewhat cliche and I am hesitant to use it.

What are your thoughts? I am sure someone else can be more inventive than I.

Thanks all!

Another god, an evil god or near-god could attempt to kill the Fates. Or something in them could break and unravel, as the Fates are a lot about spinning and weaving.

I am not necessarily looking to kill them, just unseat them and their power, but your idea does bring an idea to the front...

Perhaps there is a prophesy of a person who bears the spark of the divine, like Hercules who can be the one to bring them down. Perhaps he is one of their children, either directly or indirectly; perhaps their spilt blood or tear created a child.

Chaos Primeval
Something that just came to mind which is going to be brought to you by the letter W, for Doctor Who.

Perhaps an item was found that bore the sentience of a creature of pimeval chaos that was imprisoned by the Fates and those of their day. This creature is as old as the Fates and just as powerful, but carefully contained and the threads that the Fates have wrought that bound it are now slowly, only now, coming undone.

The item has found its way to the Raven Queen and it is using her desire for more power to goad her towards taking them on. It is directing her to its body hidden away by the ages and to a primeval ritual/machine that can help her to attempt to acquire their power so that it can manifest again and get revenge on the Fates ushering in a new era of chaos the likes of which have not been seen in aeons.

By turning the Fate's worshipers into her following, which means there is more than likely a Prophesy on the subject.

Plan:
 • Get her clerics to reconize the Fates as sisters of the Raven, the Magpie and the Crow - this is also the building of temples temples.
 • Start the mergering - This is a high level cleric that starts saying the Fates are just manifestation of the Raven.
 • Create cults - these are the hold outs for the old ways.

In the end, she gets their domains, they become demi-gods or go to limbo.

Here are a few ideas:
Make a prophecy (or multiple) that is/are at odds with a prophecy of the Fates, and make hers come true and the Fates' fail.
Acquire the Loom of Destiny, the Strands of Circumstance, and the Tapestry of Creation, and have her followers perform a ritual for each to bind them to her.
Having an appropriate follower of hers (a maiden, a mother, and a crone) each go to a place sacred to the appropriate Fate, and having them offer prayers to her as they recite prophecies she has prepared. If the Raven Queen makes these prophecies come true, she will steal some of the Fates power.

Hand of Evil : In a normal campaign that would definitely be the way to go. I unfortunately did not give you guys all of the information that you needed since I was in such a huge rush.

The Fates are going to be what I will call primievals, something older and more powerful than gods or primordials, and perhaps they were the first to utter the Words of Power (creation and destruction, etc).

The Fates will not have woshippers per se. People may say prayers to them in hoping for a kind, if not wildly successful life, but they do not have (spellcasting) priests. All that they are really going to have (and they will have a monopoly on) is oracles. Those beings blessed (or cursed) by them shall have the gift of prophesy and the ability to see destiny.

Other gods may have prophets of sorts, but none who could rival the ability of those blessed by the Fates.

Hmmm... I think I will use this. I will have to think on these. Your examples are quite evocative.... =) I have a plan coming together.

Thanks all for your thoughts.

As a side note, I think I am going to yank the Fate portfolio from the Raven Queen so it does not conflict with the Fates. This will also keep things more clear.
