A friend of mine recently pointed out this paragraph on Ravenloft's Wikipedia entry (emphasis mine):
I hadn't heard anything about such a short story, and can't seem to find any information regarding who wrote it, where it was released, how to find it, or anything else about it. Does anyone know what this article is referring to?
With the 4th edition of D&D coming in 2008, the future of the Ravenloft setting is unknown, though there is speculation among fans that it will be given minimal treatment, if at all (unless another gaming company pursues a license from Wizards of the Coast). However, in 2007, Wizards of the Coast announced the printing of two new Ravenloft novels for 2008, Black Crusade and The Sleep of Reason[3], fueling more speculations. A short story based around the realms of Darkon, Lamordia and Bluetspar was released on October 31st 2007 as a special for Halloween and featured characters inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and Clarke Ashton Smith.
