It was night when the Sea Mare bore into Rilfane Harbour. The stars burned brightly over the sea, but none so bright as the Eye of the Southern Dragon, which glared red from the vault of the night. As the Harbourmaster's men came out on a small boat, lit by lanterns, Qore could smell the odor of the fenlands north of Torgmorn, and imagined he could hear the sounds of the jungle at night....the strange coughing warnings of the big cats, the sudden rising laugh-scream of hyenas....or perhaps it was the sound of Torgmorn itslef. Men lived there, and gnolls came bearing the treasures of forest and savannah, it was said. Although the Sea Mare was cleared, it was too dark for the harbour pilots to guide her in that night. Qore and Vidya were brought ashore on one of the ship's boats, along with those favored sailors responsible for locating buyers for the ship's cargo or sellers for the next cargo out. "Watch your hands," one of the sailors grunted as he pulled on the oars. "Dogfish'll nip your fingers clean off." The man was missing two fingers on his left hand, pinkie and ring finger. The warning was unnecessary. This was Qore's first voyage at sea, and he would be very glad to feel solid earth beneath his feet again. "Well Vidya, here we are," Qore said as the sailors drew the ship's boat up onto the shingles. "Whaddaya say we head over to that establishment over there to steady our feet a bit from that voyage? It's good to feel the earth under my feet again."
