Qore walked over to the tavern, looking around with wide eyes. He had not often walked the streets of surface towns. The place, in the evening, still stank of gutted fish, and the gulls still squabbled among the rats over buckets of entrails. Men mended sails or nets, working with sure fingers in the darkness, the smell of pipe tobacco a distinct counterpoint to the odour of fish. This region of Torgmorn was clearly given over to the docks and to trade of the sea. Most of the ships in harbour had men walking upon their decks -- guards lest some thief slip aboard at night. Some were lading cargo to sail with the grey dawn. Qore saw one group of heavily guarded men carrying tusks of ivory in bundles, each as long as the dwarf was tall, up the gangplank onto one ship....the White Mistress it was called. These folk looked on Qore with hostile and suspicious eyes. What they were carrying was no less than the Ship Master's fortune on their backs, and possibly their fortune as well. Other eyes were not so unfriendly. Urchins, dirt-faced and skinny, were still out, playing along the wharfs and along the rocky strand. An old sailor, missing an eye and a leg, begged charity with an alms-bowl and a squeezebox. Many of the folk seemed as curious about the dwarf and his companion -- perhaps, especially his companion -- as Qore was about them. Quore walked to the tavern door and opened it. A cheery warmth came from within, and the sound of good fellowship. Making sure Vidya was still with him, the dwarf pushed into the room. Vidya, of course, had her own reasons for following, for she sought Diomaxis Mal-Uhwar, an Ur-Alamen engineer, who was thought by many to be among the greatest minds for clockworks in this age of the world. She had traced him to Fort Torgmorn, and she meant to seek him out if she could while they both were here.
