Sins of a Solar Empire (havn't played this myself, tho).
Seconded, including not having played it. It is getting awesome love all over the web. I really want to play it, but know that I will become hopelessly addicted. Must avoid for my own good.

I'll second this one... Galactic Civilizations 2 meets all the criteria you're looking for, Reveille. It holds a place on my computer desk right next to Sid Meier's Civilization games -- one that I can set aside and keep coming back to.
Another vote for that!

Since you seem to like turn-based strategy, you perhaps have Civ 4 and Beyond the Sword (the expansion) lying around - if yes, you may want to take a look here. There are currently two or three fan-made space adaptions in development. A bit half-baked, if you already have Civ 4 + BTS, it cannot hurt to try'em out, since they are free. But they're not worth buying Civ 4 + BTS for the mods alone (though Civ 4 + BTS + Fall from Heaven-fantasy fan mod are worth it).

Cheers, LT.

Also, if you want a nice-linear storyline filled with really pretty space combat (like a break from really indepth galaxy conquest) Homeworld 2 cannot be recommended enough. Soooo pretty even with it being a couple years old now.
