I was just writing up an epic-level mage for my upcoming campaign, and just stumbled accross what could very well be the most powerful spell in the PHB. Wierd Illusion (Phantasm) [Fear, Mind-Affecting] LVL 9 Targets: ANY number of creatures, no two of which can be more than 30 ft. apart. Mechanic-wise: All effected creatures must make a Will save(negates). If that save fails, they must make a Fortitude Save or die. Even if the Fortitude save is successful, the subject takes 3d6 points of damage and is stunned for 1 round. The subject's strength score also drops 1d4 points for 10 minutes. Jeez, talk about an army-slayer. Imagine casting this spell on a tightly grouped low-level, low-stat creatures I.E. and army. Considering that any caster of this spell will likely have a high intelligence score and perhaps some items and feats to increase his Spell Save DC's, chances are that most if not all (I'd say 90%) of any army will be affected by the spell, and a further (90%) of that army will die instantly due. That's 81% of the army instantly killed, and a further 9% either killed by the 3d6 damage or stunned. About 90% of those not killed by the spell but who suffered the damage will die(considering that the average of a 3d6 roll is 9 and the average foot soldier has about 8{max HP lvl1 warrior=8}, but we can't just say that they ALL die, about 10% survive and are heavily damaged) that's a further 8% killed by the spell's damage. So in effect, this spell would on average kill 89% of the average human army, leaving 1% maimed. Therefore decimating the army NINE TIMES OVER in a single instant. DAMN! Cast this followed by a few cloudkills, fireballs, a summoning spell or two to clean up, and your mage just single-handedly killed a friggin army in less than a minute. Very useful for the average adventurer, but INVALUABLE for a General or similar figure.;)
