Sounds like fun. I've actually once had a fight end up with the last two combatants at 0 hp and 1 hp. Long story short, two PCs (human paladin and half-orc barbarian) had to fight an orcish chief (also a barbarian) and his shaman in two simultaneous one-on-one duels. They go at it, with the two raging barbarians knocking chunks off each other and the paladin swinging at the shaman while the latter strikes him with spells. The shaman had a weak fire shield up, which is damaging the paladin every time he hits, and as his last blow cleaves off the shaman's head, he takes enough damage to drop unconscious. Nearby, the chief and the PC barbarian are both on their last legs, and the chief is taken to exactly 1 hp. He swings and lands a hit (threatening a critical but failing to confirm) which takes the barbarian down to exactly 0 hp. The barbarian is up, and after this attack, he's going to drop to -1 hp. He swings, criticals, and buries his axe in the chief's head. And then collapses on his corpse. The players were cheering and high-fiving at the end and sweating buckets moments earlier. The reasons were twofold. Not only were all the dice being rolled in the open, but I had the two players not in the fight rolling dice for the NPCs. I've never seen two people so tense about their rolls, when they knew that good rolling could mean the other players' PCs die. It was brilliant!
