Red Hand of doom questions (spoilers)

OK,
Two things I'm missing from part 1:
#1 How do the party members figure out there is a large horde coming to D. Ferry? The map doesn't make it clear _how_ big of a horde. Does something else? Do they see them?
#2 Where do the party members get the lich's item? What could cause the party to want to go to the lich? I've not read the 2nd part carefully (just the first) but the 2nd seems to think that the players may be going that way right away.

Other wacky questions:
In the art for the attack on D. Ferry there are huge giants involved. Is there anything to indicate huge gaints aid in that attack?

The art of the map captured in part 1 seems to have a lot less (and more) information than the text would imply. What have others done?

Thanks...

***spolier Alert***

Well, as a player, I've encountered all of these parts (we're still playing through) and here's what I've found:

From the map we got from the Bubear Sorceror's room in the keep.
The map doesn't make it clear _how_ big of a horde. Does something else? Do they see them?
We scouted ahead and eyeballed the horde from a distance, seemed several thousand (?) strong, including Giants, siege engines and at least one Dragon.
#2 Where do the party members get the lich's item?
We found it in the lair of the Goblin leader in the ruined city in the swamp - or possibly in the stash of his Black Dragon.
What could cause the party to want to go to the lich? I've not read the 2nd part carefully (just the first) but the 2nd seems to think that the players may be going that way right away.
We interrogated the Goblin leader, we found that the leader of the horde was blackmailing the Lich with his phylactery to get his undead minions to join in the attack against Drellins Ferry/Brindoll.

We have just currently arrived at the lich's lair, and killed the behire there - our next session will be entering the lair and "negotiating" with the Lich...

Hmm, not to sure on the artwork side of things, sorry...

The hobgoblins' map is over-optimistic when it comes to the time-line. There is a table of the real time-line in the very beginning of the book.

Check out "Wyrmlord Koth Developments" on page 30. If the party manage to capture and interrogate Koth, or if they manage to decipher the notes he left behind (at worst, an NPC in Drellin's Ferry might do so successfully), then they gain detailed information on the size of the forces gathered under the Red Hand banner.

If not, they'll just have to either trust that it's sufficient to at least wipe out Drellin's Ferry, or else scout it themselves (provision for such an attempt is made in the module).

#2 Where do the party members get the lich's item? What could cause the party to want to go to the lich? I've not read the 2nd part carefully (just the first) but the 2nd seems to think that the players may be going that way right away.
The phylactery is recovered at the end of part 2, and is accompanied by a note which clearly indicates that returning it to its owner may cripple the Horde's plans.

I think those are all hill giants, which provide the artillery in the assault on Drellin's Ferry. Not quite Huge, but close to it.

The art of the map captured in part 1 seems to have a lot less (and more) information than the text would imply. What have others done?
My party were able to glean most of what they needed to know from the map. However, they also got more details when they took Koth's notes back to Drellin's Ferry, where the wizard Sertierin deciphered them.
