Last night my players decided to smash the phylactery. They didn't realise it was a bargaining chip. Anyway they made plans to go to the Ghostlord and face him. In the first encounter Varanthian ate the rogue and the party had to withdraw, after slaying V. The rogue didn't make it since he is an outsider. V was an EL 8. The party rested for the night and went in again the next morning. With only three characters they were able to defeat most of the Red Hand agents with surprising ease. They found an unconscious fighter in the store room (left there for later dissection) and gave him some weaponry. Soon enough they encounter the lich and the wizard shouts "Lightning bolt!". Of course, at this point diplomacy is out the window and fighting ensues. I don't bother fighting conservatively with the lich but go all out and let them have it. Two rounds later the lich was destroyed and the party were virtually unharmed. The most important spells cast must have been Death Ward on the barbarian and Greater Magical Weapon on the new fighter. Ghostlord was a complete cakewalk at CR 13. Weird. I might have played him wrong at some point. I used the corrupting touch on the barbarian knowing full well he was protected (but of course G didn't). The PCs are strong 32 point 8th level characters so that might factor in but still... V was tremendously difficult to get by but G was easy. All in all a great session, mind you, even though it didn't follow script.
