Ummm... GIVE UP familiar to obtain cohort would, to me, as DM mean that the player cannot in any way reference any rules that apply to familiars for this COHORT. Instead, reference Cohort rules.

Therefore, no aberrant familiar rules ever get applied. You don't HAVE a familiar, you have a cohort.
 


If the class has powers based specifically on having a familiar, then I would tell them they cannot give up the familiar for a cohort. The two are mutually exclusive.

"Powers work on familiar" means if no familiar, no powers. That's my take on it anyway. Take this with a grain of salt, however, as I'd never allow a fleshwarper in my game anyway.
