So a thematically appropriate familiar with a CR of about 1/4 that grants +1 to grapple checks would be balanced. </p><p></p><p>That said, it's difficult to imagine a pure wizard who is unbalanced by the +3 bonus. It does mean that any grappling build will contain at least 1 level of wizard, as the +3 to grapple checks more than offsets the lost -1 BAB.</p></blockquote><p></p>
