Regeneration and Ability Point Loss

I know the rules do not say specifically so, but should regeneration be allowed to restore ability point loss? What you think?

Actually, the DMGs section on regeneration (page 81) says that attacks that do not do hit point damage ignore regeneration. One of the examples given is poison damage, which does ability score damage. Thus, regeneration not only should not, but does not restore ability score damage.
