Rend - How is it Worked Out?

Hello Everyone,

Just a question on the Rend ability and how it is mechanically worked out.

My main reason is I'm redoing my Monster Summoning Cards into the DMGII format. To confuse thing's further, I'm taking into account the augment summoning feat and the psuedonatural template - Alienist: Lucifus Cray.

In particular, I am having difficulty with the Girallon and its Rend ability - stated in the block as 2d4+9 but then in the explanation as 2d4+12. Out of interest the flat-footed AC seems to be out by 2 for the creature unless there's something I'm missing here too.

Best Regards and Thanks for any Help

I can't find any general rules for Rend, but for all other rendiferous creatures the damage seems to be 2 claw dice + 1.5 x Str bonus. That would make 2d4+9 right for the girallon.

Further digging shows that in 3.0 the girallon had Str 26 and its rending damage was 2d4+12 with no inconsistencies. They changed the strength for 3.5, but screwed up the editing.

I have no explanation for the flat-footed AC.

Edit: Or is it "rendiphilous"?

From memory, the MM errata says "Rend sometimes differs between stat block and text; the stat block is corrcet in these cases."

But you should probably look it up.

So for an augmentedly? summoned and "rendiphilous" (it's most likely simply rending) Girallon, we would actually be looking at 2d4+12?
