In the darkness, you can see a faint greenish glow. As you bring your torch in range, you see a common skeleton covered in a transparent, viscous green ooze. Render-Born are common skeletons coupled with a weakly acidic undead ooze. Render-Born Skeletons are the unexpected result of frequent applications of animate dead spells on corpses floating in rendering vats. Some necromancers use common rendering vats to remove the flesh from a corpse's skeleton prior to animation. As the skeletons are reanimated, a small amount of negative energy can bleed off into the slurry of fats, proteins, and dead flesh. With time, the slurry itself can animate. When it does, it becomes part of the newly animated skeleton. Render-Born Skeletons are mindless undead. They do not wear any armor or weild any weapons. In all other respects, they behave exactly like standard skeletons. Render-Born is a meta-template that can be applied to skeletons (referred to hereafter as the base skeleton) of all types. Size and Type: The skeleton's type remains undead. It uses all the skeleton's statistics and special abilities, except as noted here. Hit Dice: The skeleton gains two hit dice. Speed: As the base skeleton. Armor Class: As the base skeleton. Attacks: A Render-Born Skeleton retains all the natural attacks it had as a skeleton, and gains an additional tentacle attack each round at its highest bonus. Damage: All the base skeleton's attack do an additional 1d4 points of acid damage on a successful hit. A Render-Born's tentacle attack also does 1d4 points of damage + 1d4 points of acid damage. Special Attacks: A Render-Born Skeleton gains no new special attacks. Special Qualities: A Render-Born Skeleton loses its Damage Reduction 5/Bludgeoning. A Render-Born Skeleton gains the following special qualities. Immunity to Acid (Ex): Render-Born Skeletons are immune to acid damage. Damage Reduction 5/- The ooze that coats the Render-Born Skeleton's bones resists blunt weapons, protecting the skeleton underneath. Saves: Bonuses are Fort +1/3 HD, Ref +1/3 HD, and will +1/2HD+2. Abilities: A Render-Born Skeleton gains no new ability score increases. Skills: A Render-Born Skeleton has no skills. Feats: A Render-Born Skeleton gains no new feats. Environment: Usually the same as base skeleton. Organization: Any. Challenge Rating: As the base skeleton +2. Treasure: None. Alignment: Always neutral evil. Advancement: As base skeleton. Level Adjustment: ---. So does this rate a +2 CR? Or should it be higher? Or lower? I was looking for something creepier and a little buffer than the standard skeleton. I have this vision of an undead ooze that can't move much on its own, but that attacks independently of the underlying skeleton. Please, let me know what you think. Criticism is welcome. --G
