repairing items using arcane magic?

What are the spellcasting options for arcane casters who intend to repair mundane items? I'm thinking specifically of repair of a ship's hull but the question also applies to non-wooden gear.

Mending only applies to objects of 1 lb. or less, and Make Whole is divine only. I don't have access (yet) to Complete Arcane, so I have no clue if the Repair Light/Moderate/Critical Damage spells are strictly limited to animate constructs.

Fabricate and an appropriate roll?

Personally I don't understand why clerics are the only ones with make whole.

Or animate objects for that matter...

Neither of those makes sense to me either. Plus, Fabricate is a whopping 5th level spell.

Methinks the wizard has to research an arcane equivalent to Make Whole, or else I have to house rule something. woo woo :\

The latest publication of the Repair series of spells was in the Eberron Campaign Book and the spell looks to have remained unchanged. It repairs constructs only. Too bad that, it would be rather handy spell for fixing a cart, a ship, castle walls, etc. Though perhaps *too* handy then.
