Request: Ultimate Adventuring & Dungeoneering Kit

First Post
I figure it's easier to request feedback from people who have thought of this before but...

I am starting a new character in a campaign to replace my recently deceased PC. We start at 9th level and my character is a Ropue/Nightsong Infiltrator and the flavor is very much a go anywhere, anytime type character who seeks to delve into the great mysteries of the world be they in an ancient crypt, a deadly dungeon, a lady's private chambers in a Keep, etc.

So I began to think that I want my character to have a good supply of utility items to help out in unique situations - a la McGyver

So please respond with your ideas to add to the list.

What are must-have adventuring utility items for you? The items can be magical or non-magical. And please let us know why you like the items so much. (reference to sources would be nice as well but not a must)

Thanks!

Here are two items I have always heard about to start things off.

~ Immovable Rods - have 3 or so and you can use them as a ladder to climb anywhere. Or use them to block doors, etc. I am sure there are tons of other uses also.

~ Collabsable 10 ' Pole - used for crossing gaps and chasms etc. and other things I guess. I have never seen one used but I knew a guy who used to swear he always had to have one.

Tanglefoot bags. There are times when you need to slow or eliminate pursuit without hurting anybody. In fact anything that lets you deal lots of nonlethal damage can be extremely handy. A Merciful weapon or a fireball wand (assuming you can use it) that has nonlethal substitution.

EDIT: Nonlethal substitution is a metamagic feat in Complete Arcane, I believe.

Waxed twine

Bees wax

piece of canvas say 3 X 6 feet

Serrated big knife

Candles

Marbles

piece of coal for fuel or marking or blacking your face and hands etc..

Chalk

3' piece of iron wood about 2 inches in diameter, acts as weapon and tool.

Flat pry bar possible of adamantine since you could afford it.

Just some mundane but useful Ideas. Sure you can use magic to accomplish things but why waste it.

For slightly magical ideas

Wand of prestidigitation cheap and useful.

There are some handy items that come to mind. There's what's basically the alchemical equivalent of a gas mask in Savage Species; there's an automated climbing spool (than can even pull you up the rope attached) in the same book; and there's basically the D&D-ized equivalent of a Fremen stillsuit--a full-body apparatus that completely conserves your body moisture, great for deserts--in Sandstorm.

A wand of unseen servant, or, even better, a wand of extended unseen servant for a 90 foot range is the ultimate delver's tool. Being able to exert 20 pounds of force (enough to open most doors and set off most traps) from 90 feet away is unbelievably useful.

Even better would be a wonderous item which summons the extended unseen servant once a day for 5 hours. Good enough for most things and you don't have to worry about charges.
