Researching New Spells?

Hi all,

I'm having a hard time tracking down the 3.5 rules for researching new spells (other than a paragraph or so in the DMG about balancing new spells), and, come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had cause to reference them before. I was just wondering where I might look to find them, or if there were in fact set rules in the core books for PC spellcasters researching new spells.
I feel like I've seen the rules (with times, costs, etc.), but maybe I'm just flashing back to 2E.
Thanks for any help.

There really is nothing in the SRD. You can see this line:
Independent Research
A wizard also can research a spell independently, duplicating an existing spell or creating an entirely new one.
The problem with it is that it doesn't allow sorcerers, bards, or other arcane casters to do research because they have no spellbook. The Complete Arcane might have rules on it, so if someone has that book handy, perhaps they could offer an opinion.

Edit: Oh yeah, Welcome to ENWorld! :)

3.0 DMG p. 42 has three paragraphs on the subject. Research is 1 week/spell level, 1,000 gp expense per week, must be in well-stocked library in large city, at the end takes a Spellcraft check (DC 10 + spell level) for success.

The DM must make a decision as to whether the spell should be allowed in the game, and at what level.

Thanks both! I'm out of town (out of the country, even) and don't have the 3.0 books handy, but at least I know what's there and not there.
And thanks for the welcome, too - I've been lurking for ages, and figured, hey, I had a question, so here I am.

Basically because a bard and sorcerer have a limit to the number of spells they can know that can not be increased (except potentially via feats) and this is not modified by any ability score.

3.5 DMG researching original spells does not forbid sorcerers or bards from researching new spells in fact the text reinforces the absolute limit they can know regardless of research. So I would say they are indeed allowed to research new spells but they still can not exceed their max limit of know spells.
