Restoration after level gain

My ruling would be that the character gains no benefit -- the newly gained levels are replacing lost levels, and that's the end of the story.

However (working from 3.0 here), the window for restoration is only a short number of days. I find it hard to believe that a character could gain multiple levels inside of 10-or-so days. This problem just disappears if you (like normal) only award XP at the end of a whole adventure -- play out the period through which restoration is possible, then award XP, so it's never an issue.

Worst case, figure out how many XP he lost, and return that many XP ... no more, no less. The player can hardly claim to feel cheated: that would put them exactly where they were if they'd gotten the restoration in a timely manner.

That would probably be the best way to handle it. It's probably not something that's likely to come up too often but, given the Greater Restoration spell with its more generous time limit, it's a long way from inconceivable.

You haven't played RttToEE then, I assume. It's strange to have a PC go from 4th to 15th level in all of a month and a half.

I ran a party through Speaker in Dreams and they gained two and a half levels within the span of a week.

Then they spent two months of downtime catching up their wealth levels by selling and making items.

Training requirements solve all ills. (1st Ed., we hardly knew ye.)

Of course, there were few things more frustrating than having enough XP to level, but not enough cash to pay the training fees.

The only way to get the money was to adventure, but you couldn't get any more XP until you levelled...

Aargh.

Ugh! I thought training was neat and realistic at the time. Then I started to wonder why you can't learn anything from the supposedly good teachers until you go out and spend weeks killing monsters on your own.

Now, I figure that training is a good idea, but I have it grant xp instead of requiring xp. A fighter might train very hard and make 3rd or 4th level without ever drawing a sword in anger. It also makes some sense for feats although I could see learning tricks on the field as well.

All told, I'm glad training requirements are no longer a part of the game.
