"Fire Giant's Daughter "
DUNGEON 39
Review by Jay A. Hafner
This scenario was written by Wolfgang Baur and is 6 pages. Artwork by Bob Klasnich. The old Dungeon scenarios didn't have even rudimentary Adventure Summaries, but I managed to read through this thing.
Spoilers:
The scenario is set on the edge of the world in Iceland, very near where the great worm is devouring it. It uses the VIKINGS handbook for ideas and is obviously inspired by Robert E Howards CONAN story "The Frost Giant's Daughter." It is a role-playing scenario.
The PC's are sitting around bored and listening to stories and decide to follow up on a legend. After some wandering they are rune-geased by Ingrid, the Fire Giants daughter to help set her free. She is being rune-held by her fire giant father. She first rune-geases the party to follow her (running speed without dying). Those that survive, are pled with to go to her fathers cave and negotiate for her release so she can see the world.
The Father, Starkad claims kinship with Surt, kinf og the fire giants. he is possessive of his family.
The mother is beaten regularly by the father, but feels she cannot leave him.
The two sons are simply petty and greedy.
To win Ingrid's freedom the PC's have to win contests (mostly non-violent) by a decisive mark. Since the Giants have a code of honor, they will follow through if the PC's succeed in these several contests. Wrestling, pine-cone collecting, singing, spear throwing, drinking, etc are the tasks and if the PC's think of more, they are welcome. There's almost nothing to go on for ideas for these contests or what the goals should be, so the DM shouldn't count on this scenario to fill in the details here.
If the PC's succeed, they basically win, and they also can ride in a leather bag across to Muspelheim or Jotunheim. "Leaving Midgard this way involves evading the Midargd serpent (which attempts to devour mortals)".
There is a simple map of the cave of the cave of the fire giants and one piece of artowrk on the opening of the black-skinned giant drawing in the snow with an icicle. Two new runes are presented.
This scenario can very easily be modified to 3.5 D&D.
The premise is 'ok.' The layout is fine, however important details to help the DM are lacking. There seems to be a 'feeling' about this scenario that it could be better. Thank god scenario standards of scenario format and content have improved.
