Is this too hard/easy?

What's the best riddle you've ever asked to your players?

This riddle is actually fairly easy.

I've never asked my players a riddle. Mainly becuase if I knew the answer or could figure it out, then my players could too, so I never ask. If I couldn't figure it out and/or did not know the answer then I couldn't ask my players because I wouldn't be sure if the answer they gave was right?

There is a riddle that I like, let's see if I can remember it?

Rich people want me,
Poor people have me,
What am I?

I beleive there was atleast 2 or 3 mroe lines but I can't remember.

Riddles are hard because if the players can't see the pattern or figure out the answer, they can get frustrated and then act out. I did use many riddles from a Dungeon magazine, for the most part they were simple, but one or two threw the group for a loop.

Creeping Death beat me to my riddle:) , but I knew it a little different and presented it like this to the party:

The Jinn hovered before them and said, "You have my gratitude, friends, for slaying the sha'ir. And now, ma Salaama (good bye)!" Goha, the rogue, coughed loudly and the jinn said, "Is it a reward you seek then? Even when you camels strain to bear the weight of the plundered treasures of the ancient temple where the sha'ir lived ? Your greed equals my cousin Faroukh's, friend." Now Yusuf's lip curled, and his hand fell to his sword. The jinn quickly spoke again.

"Still, I suppose I could tels you an old jinni riddle. You need only speak the answer, and it shall appear before you as your reward. "

Khalid determined the jinn was speaking the truth, so they consented to the deal. The jinn said:

"A rich man needs it,
A poor man has it,
And it is greater than God himself."

And then the jinn disappeared.

They eventually answered correctly, and found their reward appear before them. They then proceeeded to draw up plans for how to track the jinn down in order to secure what they felt was a more just payment for their services.

I use riddles a lot in my game. It usually does bog down a bit, even simple ones, as getting six people to agree on a single answer is almost as easy as capping a volcano.

Word riddles are good for when you end a session and want to give the group something to think about. Often times I would think they would look it up on the internet and show up with it answered so we can move on. Doing it that way is much better than hoping they will solve a tough one in the middle of a session, and IMO I think it's much better if the players solve it than if they don't.

here's another one for fun --

I've little strength, but mighty powers;
I guard small hovels and great towers.
But if perchance my master leaves,
He must ensure he safeguards me.

None of my characters will answer a riddle again due to a bad experience with a riddle in Heart of Nightfang Spire that I failed to save against.
