Ring of Blinking price correct?

Just noticed something curious about the ring of blinking. It's CL is 7th, yet it's priced as a command word, unlimited use item at CL 5th...

3 (spell level) x 5 (caster level) x 1,800 = 27,000

Now, if it actually functioned at 7th-level, it would be more expensive, but it ain't. Do you folks think this is a mistake or do you think it's just a case of "arbitrary" pricing. Personally, I don't think it's the latter, as the price is way too convenient of a match for the formula above.

Arbitrary pricing.

Caster level is a minor issue for a continuous item -- not significant enough to warrant a 40% boost in price.

The formula gives rather high prices. I do not think many DMG items actually follow it.

It's not continuous though.

Hmm...did we both flip-flop on this point sometime over the last 18 months or so?

I still say arbitrary pricing. The 3.0 version also had caster level 7 was 30k (which made it look enticingly like a continuous item). No matter how you interpret it, that was also arbitrary pricing.

Possibly. Actually, most likely. The Sage (or was it CS?) had replied to me once that unless stated otherwise, a ring functioned continuously, having no limit to duration. Something about that being the benefit of rings. Been a while since I thought about it.

Bah. I don't buy it. Way too convenient. ;)

Not really. Check this out...

3 (spell level) x 5 (caster level) x 2,000 = 30K

Freaky, eh? :D

I'd bet anything it's arbitrarily priced. Are the majority of the items in the DMG priced per their complex and annoying pricing scheme that I've never bothered to figure out, or are there significant differences?

Few items actually adhere to the formulas, but that's nothing new. Check out the Rings of Energy Resistance. They're continuous items, but take a look at the prices...

2 x 3 x 2000 = 12K
2 x 7 x 2000 = 28K
2 x 11 x 2000 = 44K

Not a single one of them uses the x1.5 cost modifier for a 10 min/level spell being made continuous. Perhaps the theory remains that a truly continuous ring doesn't suffer that price increase? That would definately be a neat benefit for a ring.

And for the 12th+ level prereq for "forge ring" the rings really could *do* with a nifty benefit! It seems like the "highest cost/least functionality" of all the item creation feats at first glance. :)

Cheers
