This is what I found myself thinking during the blob monster sequence, or rather, why did they need to bring him so low? I get they're telling a rags to riches (to rags) story with him, but a blob monster? And in that coronation scene, he hasn't quite hit rock bottom yet. He's on the run, yes, but this is the Sauron the elves were hunting in season one, fearing he would rise again, a powerful sorcerer in his own right who struck terror into the hearts of his enemies, and yet he comes off as some poindexter from upper management trying to convince the rank and file to throw themselves under the bus for the good of the company. And he was just so unconvincing and not in the least bit scary. Again, this is supposed to be a powerful sorcerer and one of the most powerful of the Maiar. I watched episode two last night, and he had no problem pulling out all the stops to convince Celebrimbor to do his bidding. Are we supposed to believe he's learned how to be persuasive as a result of his failure with the orcs? I'm just not seeing that arc taking place or any reason he didn't overawe the orcs with his divinity. I suppose he could have not been trying out of sheer arrogance, but he also seemed unsure of himself, so it's a bit of an unclear mess what they were trying to do with that scene. To me, the whole Adar subplot is unnecessary. He was brought low because of the fall of Morgoth and his own moral failing when given the chance to repent. It would have been interesting to see that actually explored.
