Robin Hood (Spoilers)

Joker

***Spoilers***

The following is all my opinion. You may come to different conclusions when and if you see this film. I am in no way saying my disappointment will be shared with others. I am also aware that the letdown I felt was because of the unrealistic expectations I had for this film; An epic that had similar levels of drama and gory violence as Gladiator.

A rant follows.

To put it crassly, this movie sucked. Hard. It was like the makers thought to themselves; Hey, I have a brilliant idea. Let's make a movie called Robin Hood but only dedicate the last 5 minutes to the character we've known from legend.

Russel Crowe does his thing, Mark Strong pretends to be a French/English Romulan, as always I love William Hurt no matter how useless his character may be and Kate Blanchett does some serious lower lip quivering. All in all, phoned in performances dealing with an uninspired script.

I think the movie deals with about six different stories that get some time to develop only to be relegated to a state of pointlessness.

The battles which I had hoped for would be somewhat exciting looked and felt like they came straight from a TV movie. The French invasion force which was supposed to form ranks against the coming English onslaught was 1 row deep and 20 men wide without even CG warriors to fill their ranks.
When I saw the WWII landing craft I had a dreadful feeling that we were going to get an over the shoulder shot from one of the English archers as the ramps came down and we saw French troops getting peppered by arrows with someone screaming in the back "OVER THE SIDE!"

I think that this was not suppose to be an action epic but more of a character study and perhaps a shameless setup for a sequel. Even so, I thought it was dull. As entertainment it failed for me or I failed it with the earlier mentioned expectations.

Did I mention some kid had a mask on that made him look like a wookie?

I hope other people enjoyed it more. It's still Ridley Scott's work and I respect what he's done sofar. It did look very pretty at times and the French princess turned English queen is seriously hot.

It was a gruelling, morbid slog of a film. An absolute disaster. Was it a movie about anachronistic neo-pagan Lost Boys? Was it a movie about a yeoman archer who basically never shoots arrows? Was it a movie about the Magna Carta? Was it a movie about Operation Sea Lion except staged by Medieval French (with Medieval Higgins Boats) instead of the Nazis? Was it a movie about the court intrigues of William Marshal?

Tough to say. It had maybe 15 minutes of each of the above. The balance being filled out by shouting and stomping through mud. But was it a film about Robin Hood? Most certainly not.

Obviously if you know anything whatsoever about history it would be wise to avoid the film. Why don't the Crusaders have any priests with them, saying Mass before the assault? Why did they immolate Lord Lochsley? Why is Marion running around in a suit of armor? Where did the Lost Boys get warhorses? For that matter, why is Robin Hood riding around fighting on horseback instead of being an archer? What did any of it mean?

I think it was written at the local college as a collaboration of the Women's Studies department and the Football Team. And shot at Ren Faire.

Damn... And I'd been kind of looking forward to this movie.

Oh well. It's back to Patrick Bergin and Uma Thurman for me then, I guess.

What's better, this, or the Disney version?

(Men in Tights is probably the best, still)

When and how did the Lost Boys get recruited to join Marion? Or did I (mercifully) doze off and miss that part?

For an origins story of Robin Hood, wasn't he kind of old?

Higgins boats? With scenes straight out of Private Ryan?

I did like the scenery and costumes, though.

Is the Disney version the one with Kevin Costner? Then yes, that one is better entertainment.

You put it more succinctly than I did.

When the town is being set alight by the evil French and the French King's lackey they come and rescue Marion and then the trapped villagers. Later on you see them on pony back charging into the French troops, led by Marion in chainmail. At the end of the movie you see them as part of Robin's and Marion's merry men.
