Anyone remember the Polyhedron mini-game Hijinx? It was adventuring in the style of Josie & the Pussycats -- you all play bandmates, and when threatened you rock out at the bad guys (or lose them in a big maze of doors) instead of using violence. This weekend I got to actually play! It was ridiculous amounts of fun. Any game with an Air Run feat (where your feet spin in the air for a second before you actually start moving) is okay with me. The blurb:
Play your way to rock stardom as you travel the world and have wacky adventures in Hijinx! Groove to the vibe of Josie and the Pussycats, Jabberjaw, and all the other teens-form-a-rock-band cartoons from the 70s -- but with a millennial twist. We'll get the band together (i.e., create characters) on the spot. Soon after, your entirely trustworthy manager, Lemmy Tellya, will book your first gig as the late night band on Luxurnaught Cruise Lines. Playing to bored tourists will kick-start your musical career. Adventure and fame are probably over the next wave! (Please note that actual musical ability will be neither required, nor frankly, welcome.)
We had a seven person band: the lead singer Oliver ("the sexy one", complete with glam rock outfit and fan clubs), Groovy Gary the drummer (or maybe 'Grody Gravy' - it was hard to tell, he was too busy slurring and drumming on anything within reach), a keyboardist, the DJ (DJ 7eeT, complete with dancing ferret pet), the guitarist, the bassist, and - of course - a backup singer who only danced and played the tambourine. We named the band The Immortal Porpoises, chose our music style (bubblegum rock, which made us good at playing catchy songs), and we were good to go. Our band was performing on a cruise (using our music to eliminate bad vibes in the audience from people who weren't paying attention; we almost lost our DJ to a crisis of ego, but were able to cover for her, and we totally won the hostile captain over as a fan.) But mid-concert we were interrupted! The nefarious Captain Blacktorrent, foul plague of the seven seas and no fan of the RIAA, boarded the ship from his antique sailing galleon and rounded up every musician on board so as to record their music and release it free across the internet. Much silliness ensued, including dressing up in porpoise costumes to confound the pirates, sneaking around the ship to free other prisoners, and setting up an elaborate trap (that included a three-legged dog named 'Zune') to capture the Captain himself and save the day. The trap mechanic was great: we were each asked to notice an item when boarding the ship, and these were written down., Then, at the end of the game, we needed to use these items to construct our trap. If I remember correctly, it went something like:

Band members in porpoise outfits get pirates to chase them down stairs ->
DJ chases her ferret past the three-legged dog ->
dog chases ferret but is tied to the weapon shed door ->
door opens and cannonballs roll out ->
pirates trip on cannonballs and fall onto plank ->
guitarist pulls rope to drop keg of grog onto plank ->
pirates fly upwards and are caught in loose rigging ->
Captain Blacktorrent declares that he would have gotten away with it if it weren't for us meddling kids.
Hanna-Barbera would have been proud. I'd forgotten some of those mini-games; it was a delight to actually play one again.
