[Rogue's Gallery] Creatures of the Week

I'm A Banana

Potassium-Rich
Over on ConceptArt.org they have a tradition called "Creature of the Week" where they illustrate a creature based on some vaguely defined criteria with a variety of illustrations. Over here, it'll be my goal to provide some D&D stats for these critters, to further hone my stattin' skills, and to provide some interesting critters for my party to encounter.

Now, *I*'m not going to keep up with the 1 creature/week thing, I can tell you that, but when I get to it, you'll see new stuff here. :) They're going to be mostly basic stuff, not much fluff at the moment. Fluff is usually provided enough in the image itself.

So, #1, from the first CoW winners, I give you the Llartist. I've attatched the Critique Cow elsewhere

Apart from that: why is this cute-looking-thing (which should, if the paint can is right, be about medium size) both Large and strength 18 (which is the strength of a heavy warhorse -- you can't tell me that thing is battle trained!)

You can pinpoint invisible foes -- I forget, does that still suffer a 50% miss chance.

The attack bonus is wrong -- hoof should be BAB (+3) + Str (+4, but I disagree) + Size (-1, but I disagree) = +6, and I forget the grapple modifiers but that's probably wrong too.

Paint is (Ex) -- shouldn't this just be an animal, as it has no supernatural powers (other than paint production, but hey, some people juggle geese!), or did you want the hyper intelligence 'cause it's so /cute/?

I would instead say that it can cast Arcane Mark at will, personally, with all attendant benefits and penalties (err, there aren't many ; ) ) since paint doesn't stack with its scent ability, when it can close. Giving it the full glitterdust treatment might make me happier, though it would cement the creature's CR 3 position, which might or might not be what you were looking for.

Cool!

It could stand to be lower, but I used a Camel as the base creature, and, in theory, the critter could be a mount as well.

Yep, you just don't have to guess what square they're in.

I figured it was unusual enough to qualify for Magical Beast, and that would also help it keep a pretty decent CR. I don't know of many mammals capable of secreting colorful ooze, offhand. ;)

Glitterdust was closer to what I was doing, since, like you said, Arcane Mark doesn't do much. :)

Noted on the wrong calculations.

Thanks for the feedback! More coming soon! :)
